Cornerstones

What is the Cornerstones Curriculum?

 The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. Our curriculum will be delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) which will provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning.

 

We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our curriculum will provide lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that will require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum.

 

Cornerstones also provide a rigorous essential skills framework that outlines the end of year expectations in all subjects. These essential skills are tied to activities and are age related so that staff can track children’s progress and identify their individual learning needs.

At Wincheap, activities are cross curricular with a focused thematic approach to subjects across the whole curriculum. This enables our enthusiastic and creative teachers to make links between the wider topic-based curriculum and English. We aim, through building on the requirements of National Curriculum and EYFS, to expose the children to as many opportunities and experiences as possible to help them develop spiritually, morally, socially, emotionally, physically and academically and to develop cultural and community awareness. We aim to help the children develop an understanding of fundamental British values whilst appreciating their place the world, in history, in the environment as well as their potential for the future.

 

Our curriculum overviews for each year group (below) give an idea of how this works and the exciting learning opportunities your child will experience within each of the Imaginative Learning Projects. For more detail, please take a look as well at the termly curriculum plans for each year group. These are tailored to fit the interests of each class whilst meeting the objectives of the National Curriculum.

 

In English and maths, we follow the programmes of study of the National Curriculum (2014) and in phonics we use the Letters and Sounds scheme where appropriate.  In maths, our approach is one of guiding children through a learning sequence of ‘concrete, pictorial, abstract’  based on mastery learning, which aims to develop children’s secure understanding of concepts.  This is supported by the ‘Maths No Problem’ scheme.
